In my capacity as a custom travel consultant, I regularly research foreign land operators and small businesses offering unique experiences for my clients. A recent standout was finding Cooking with Teresita, offering hands-on culinary courses in Buenos Aires.
Teresita designs exclusive and wonderful day-long "foodie" gastronomic events, unlike any other - savoring Argentine and Latin American cuisine, sampling local ingredients, learning and cooking Argentinean secret recipes, and then pairing everything with local wines.
With her by our sides, my clients and I had the pleasure of visiting a local artesian bakery, neighborhood butcher shop, and a gourmet specialty foods market for a comprehensive lesson about local ingredients used in Latin American cuisine. After donning aprons and rolling up our sleeves, she lead a culinary class within the walls of her charming home kitchen in Androgue. The class was informative and casual and a ton of fun - perfect for the kitchen novice as well as the experienced chef. In addition to preparing traditional empanadas - from scratch - and assisting her husband with the Argentinean parrillada, we prepared ensalada criolla and chimichurri. The grand finale was the spectacular sit-down asada feast in her lovely backyard garden where we enjoyed all of our makings along with several glasses of wine and a remarkable handmade dulce de leche dessert... a spectacular ending to a fabulous day!
In addition to indulging in this fabulous food and wine adventure, Teresita provided an illuminated peak into the culture of the Porteños. For that, we are grateful. Sincere regards, Teresa Teresa Beall Expeditions Chico, California www.TeresaBeall.com Teresita, I just wanted you to know that I made empanadas the other day using your recipes and they were wonderful again. I just want you to know how much I enjoyed your class. Your facility is perfect and your way of involving your students is great. What I liked the most is that you allowed us to participate at whatever level we wanted. Being someone that knows how to cook, I really appreciated your extra attention when I needed it and the fact that I could get as involved as I wanted in the making and cooking of the empanadas. I might also add that the recipes are the best I have found in my extensive search for true traditional style empanadas. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Please keep up the good work. Tom Mayer Carlsbad, CA
We had a wonderful time at your cabrito cooking class - it was one of the highlights of our trip to Argentina. We really enjoyed being with "locals", your home is lovely, and the cabrito was outstanding. I've attached a few photos. Give our regards to Budha and your husband as well. Sincerely, Cathy I have been living in Buenos Aires for 3 months and Teresita's Cooking Classes have been one of the highlights. She teaches in her home which is warm and inviting. Her backyard is just beautiful, her kitchen old school and she is a delight. I took her Empanada and Asado classes and had a fantastic time. We made both baked and deep fried empanadas, beef and corn and they were amazing!! The best I've had EVER. The Asado class is incredible as you start out with a trip to the butcher where Teresita selects all the meats. Watching the various meats grill while making sauces and drinking wine was amazing and then to eat....the BEST!! Truly these classes are unforgettable, enjoyable and a must for anyone desiring an authentic Argentine experience. Again, thank you Teresita for making my BA experience special : ) Besos, Wendy Dear Teresita and Graciela, We really loved the entire day that we had at your mom's place, it was wounderfull and it was a really nice supprice since we got this course from our wifes as a gift. Both Staffan and me learnt a lot, not only about argentinian cooking but also about how it is to live in Argentina. So the time we spent together gave us a lot more than just tomato chopping, barbecue and good wines, it gave us a memory for life. In fact this day was one of the highlight for the whole month of traveling that we did since we came so close the "the real Argentinian life". And you can be sure that we definatley will have some chumichurry at our table when we do the barbecue at our summer house this summer. The only thing i can advise you to do different is to have a short introduction before you go out to buy the meat about what kind of meat you will be served, from which animal it will be and which part of the animal it is. In this way it will be clearer when you see all the delicious pieces of meet at the buthcer shop. If we ever will come to Buenos Aires again, which i really hope we will since we loved the city, you can be sure that we will show up fore some more wine and barbecue. Thank's a lot and our love to you all, and if you ever come's to Sweden just contact me and i will do my best to help you out. Best regards Michael Cronholm Uddevalla, Sweden The cooking class was amazing! If we had more time in Argentina, we would have definitly taken more classes. The ingredients were fresh and the instruction was very clear. I have absolutely no regrets and would like to thank Teresita for making my stay in Buenos Aires memorable. Axel, USA
Cooking with Teresita was one of the best highlights of our trip. It was such a warm and welcome experience that I would recommend it to anyone who visits Buenos Aires. As a chef, I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed day spent in Teresita´s beautiful kitchen while sipping on a glass of Malbec. The wonderful change of pace from my usual hectic work day! Teresita explained things beautifully, making it a wonderful experience for my wife who does not speak Spanish. The empanadas came out perfect, and so delicious that I ate way to many while spending the afternoon in Teresita´s orchid garden. We had such a wonderful time. Our only regret is that we did not stay at the house so that we might learn more from her and enjoy her wonderful company. Thank you so much! All the best, James Redford and Suzanne Nissim-Sabat The cooking class was amazing! If we had more time in Argentina, we would have definitly taken more classes. The ingredients were fresh and the instruction was very clear. I have absolutely no regrets and would like to thank Teresita for making my stay in Buenos Aires memorable. Ajibola Oliyide A cooking session with Teresita is both educational and fun. The lovely setting of her home and garden is a perfect place to enjoy Argentinian food, wine and friendship. Teresita is an energetic and outgoing personality who makes the cooking experience superb (and she makes the best empanadas in Buenos Aires). Viva Teresita! Rodney H. Mykle It reminded me of the wonderful time we had at Teresita's. The experience was one of the highlights of our trip to Buenos Aires. It was so interesting to visit and cook and eat together. There is something special about the time spent in a kitchen and there is something magical about the time spent in the kitchen and at the back patio at Teresita's. Their home and back yard were lovely. And Teresita and her granddaughter were a treat. We could not have asked for more. Robert "Brad" Clark My step-father and I had such a wonderful experience with Teresita. It was such an adventure for us to arrive at the house, but what a wonderful place to arrive at! I have been telling friends and family members that Teresita is like the Martha Stewart of Argentina! The class was so relaxed, comfortable and felt like we were at a friend's home. The empanadas were easy to prepare and Teresita was very informative in letting me know what kind of ingredients are the best, techniques for folding the empanada's,etc. I also really enjoyed the wine she served - muy delicioso! It was so lovely to sit outside in the garden, eat the empanadas among great company and drink the vino. Thank you for such an awesome experience! I am hosting an empanada party soon and am excited to cook for my friends in Oregon. I was so inspired and taken aback with my visit to Buenos Aires. It is easy to fall in love with BA. I hope to move there sometime this year. I would like to take more classes with Teresita. My best, Elizabeth We really enjoyed our time with Teresita and all. We loved going to the butcher shop first. It was great getting a pick up at our hotel. You made it all very easy and we felt as though we were welcomed with true Argentine hospitality. We look forward to trying the empanatas at home. Nancy Jaworski I enjoyed going to Teresita's cooking class. In fact it was the highlight to my visit to Buenos Aries. The class was hands on, made it more enjoyable. Your setting and property were a delight to see. I have studied cooking for over 10 years and you rounded out my knowledge. Thank you for the privilege of attending. David Blye I want to thank you again for providing Kristin and I an experience we will never forget. The trip to the butcher, the grilling of the meats, the sauce-making, wine drinking, champagne, flan, and of course hanging out with you and your friends, all made for an incredible day!! I would like to write a testimonial to express how much I enjoyed your class. I didn't see a place to do this on the website. Shall I write something and send to you to post on your website? Again, you are very special. Two of my best days in Buenos Aires were spent at your home. Thank you. Besos, Wendy
Chef Dan Perlman from Casa Saltshaker came to Cooking with Teresita and posted in his blog: We had a great time learning to make some unusual breads - at least for me - a pão de quesijo from Brazil, chipas from northern Argentina, and we were going to make a fairly straightforward pan criollo, but rather than go with something that basic, since both of us make breads already, Teresita offered to teach us her two types of empanadas doughs, one for the oven, one for frying. I'm afraid I'm not going to give you any recipes. They're Teresita's, not mine to give out, and hers to teach. It's worth the trip, and worth the price. My friend even decided that he and his wife might take advantage of some available days here and there and just get out of Buenos Aires for a quiet get-away now and again. Hey, maybe Henry and I will do the same, continued Hi Teresita: We had such a good time this afternoon with you! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. And thank Buddha also so much for his driving for us - I really enjoyed learning about Argentina from him. And we will see you again on the 21st! R.
I took three cooking classes with Teresita this past June and was delighted by the results. As I love to cook and entertain at home, I went into the class with very high expectations. Teresita surpassed all of them. She made the classes fun and easy and always choose recipes that best highlighted the rich and diverse flavors of South America. Plus, her informal teaching style created a very warm and welcoming environment in which to learn. The result was that I left with a newfound confidence in my ability to cook varied cuisines from South America. I would highly recommend her classes for anyone who´se serious about understanding, tasting, and preparing the wonderful cuisines that South America has to offer. Dan Hawes, Washington, DC., U.S.A. Emma and I are still thinking about the wonderful afternoon that we shared with you in your home, and the experience was a real pleasure for us. The food was truly delicious, and in fact we will be preparing the meal tomorrow for a small party with some friends from buenos aires. The afternoon we spend with you was an experience that we shall remember for a long time to come. Thank you for all your attention and care, With warmest regards, Pia and Emma Cooking with Teresita was a great experience - learned a lot, talked a lot, and ate a lot! Everything we made was absolutely delicious and Teresita is obviously a real pro (and just a lovely woman). Plus, it was a ton of fun getting to know the other members in the class and then sit on Teresita's patio on a beautiful summer afternoon eating empanadas and drinking wine. We couldn't have enjoyed the experience any more! Thanks again! Janna Teresita, Look what Ken got me for Christmas! We have tried lots of things already and we are having so much fun with it. The liver pate was excellent and the foccacia is almost as good as we had in Genoa. Your empanadas are such a big hit, everyone loves them. We even took them to our Spanish class. Our teacher is from Buenos Aires and your empanadas made him home sick. He says he will return home next year after being away 30 years. We saw that Dan Perlman took your empanada class and was very pleased with the other South American breads also. He really did a nice write up. (We still like your food better!) Hope your plans for your trip are coming along. We contacted our friend in Genoa so when you know the dates you will be there let us know. If his work permits, maybe you can get together. You and Raul would both enjoy Nuccio. We have so may fond memories of our stay with you and the great cooking classes. Give our regards to Raul and Budda . Don't forget to come up to see us next time that you visit Grace. Best regards, Mary Ann We are back in California, and I'm writing this note to thank you for the wonderful meals you prepared for John and me. We had a wonderful time in Buenos Aires, it's such a beautiful city, we visited many places and each one was special, but what was more special was meeting you. You welcomed us into your beautiful home and taught us how to prepare the most delicious Argentinean meals ever. The empanadas were outstanding, also the papas rellenas, humito, matambre, etc. We really enjoyed being there, tasting the wines and all the dishes you prepared for us. You made us feel so much at home while we were away from home! As you know, before we left Argentina, we wanted to take cooking lessons and learn the typical dishes. John searched the internet and found your site and booked one cooking class. After that class, we were so impressed with you, your cooking and your home, that we wanted to go back a second time, which we did, and we enjoyed it even more! I should also mention that the wine we drank with the meals was superb. Thank you again, Teresita, for giving us the opportunity to learn about cooking Argentinean meals. Thank you again. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you. John and Vicky P.s. Next time our friends visit Argentina, we will definitely let them know that they cannot leave Buenos Aires without taken a cooking class from you. Please give our regards to your husband Raul and also to Jorge, who was nice enough to pick us up to our hotel and to take us to your lovely home. I just wanted to say that i had an absolutely wonderful time with Teresita. Her house is so inviting and warm, as is she. I not only learned great recipes but had a great time learning them. It will definitely be one of my experiences from Argentina that I will keep with me for a lifetime and more. Thanks for everything Teresita! Allison Zunder
We truly enjoyed the experience, being in a home added to the overall good experience, we enjoyed the 3 days, learned something and the cooking, combined with the train trip/back from BA made the whole thing a very positive event for us Gracias para todo zorrito Teresita's cooking class is wonderful. We learned how to make empanadas, drank wine, and practiced speaking Castellano with Teresita. Teresita made us feel right at home in her cozy/charming house. Not only was the class itself informative, but it was a great reason to travel out to the suburbs of BA to get a taste of the life there and see another town. We highly recommend this cooking class! Tanya and Christine San Francisco, CA
I visited South America (Argentina) on April of 2007 with two of my girl friends. We wanted to do something differently cultural, and I, being a cooking enthusiast, researched and suggested Teresita's Cooking class. Taking her Brazilian cooking class was probably one of the best decisions we made! It was enlightening to travel to Adrogue and see a little town outside Buenos Aires. Teresita's home is warm, welcoming, and full of interesting artifacts and photographs from her life and her family's lives. She is open, caring, and a great cook! We had fun learning the dishes, and even more eating them afterwards--telling stories and laughing over wine and cocktails. We left with about 6 different recipes that we are certain to make again! Thanks Teresita!
One of the highlights of my time in Buenos Aires was the wonderful parilla cooking course with Teresita. Everything was made so easy and I thoroughly recommend the day trip to anyone interested in cooking (or eating). My girlfriend and I were picked up from the city by Teresita's charming neighbour George and driven out to her beautiful home in a leafy suburb out of Buenos Aires. Our first stop was at the local butcher where we purchased every bit of cow imaginable. Then, with much meat in hand, we settled by the BBQ in Teresita's lush garden - the perfect setting for the cooking class. The parillada lesson was followed by a superb lunch full of meat, wine and wonderful conversations - and of course a nap in the car on the way home. A magic day - I can't wait to do the empanada cooking course. All the best, Annabelle
Teresita has a beautiful home and a warm, welcoming style. Even though my kitchen experience is limited, her explanations were easy to follow and she provided interesting cultural information about the dishes we prepared. I am eager to return to take another class and will definitely recommend her to others. Aaron Plantenberg Washington, DC
I took the 3-day South American cooking class with Teresita and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic, intimate, hands-on cooking experience! I am a young woman who is traveling alone in Argentina and Teresita - who is friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable about South American cuisine - immediately welcomed me into her home and kitchen. While chatting, listening to music, and sampling typical Argentine wines, she gave me private cooking lessons on typical dishes from Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. The luncheons in Teresita's beautiful garden were a perfect way to end each lesson. For people interested in cooking and having a unique experience in a cozy Argentine home, Teresita's cooking lessons are a "must-do." I have already recommended her to many of my family members and friends. Thanks Teresita! Maeve Cunningham Boston, Massachusetts - USA
Our experience cooking at the Teresita was amazing. She welcomed us into her beautiful and cozy home and showed us patiently how to prepare empanadas. This class was a cultural experience for us. We would definitely recommend this experience to our friends! Thank you! Elvis, TX, USA
review posted on www.tripadvisor.com This was a wonderful place to stay , very peaceful and relaxing. Teresa was very accomodating and helpful in getting places and finding cultural things to do; she arranged tango classes which was great. She was great in teaching cooking classes, a great way to learn to cook Argentine meals and use it later at home. This was an excellent deal and a great way to really experience the people and culture of Argentina. It would be hard to find a better deal. The location was fine, and it is easy enough to get transportation to other places. It is about a five to ten minute walk to stores and to a major train line. I would recommend this place to anyone
We had a wonderful afternoon cooking and drinking with Teresita! We simply loved learning from her. Maria Lotto Bagniese, Germany review posted on www.tripadvisor.com I had the pleasure of staying a few days at Terasita B&B in Jan '07. Teresa was extremely helpful before arriving – she answered my numerous questions promptly which facilitated my trip. She arranged for airport pickup/drop-off which I recommend you use. The Terisita cottage is magical – clean, quiet and lovingly decorated. It is set in a wonderful garden full of greenery and hummingbirds feeding and other birds singing. It was relaxing to sit on the porch and read or just enjoy the view. Teresa serves homemade bread and jam and this delicious breakfast was served in the garden. I highly recommend taking a cooking class with Teresa – she is an excellent teacher and the empadas were incredible! And she knew just where I could find a specific wine at a good price. Of course Teresa is the best reason to visit (and her family). She is warm, patient, energetic and knowledgeable. She truly wants you to enjoy your stay. I am eager to visit again, hopefully for a longer time. I fell in love with Teresita and her approach to cooking! I felt as if I was being taught by my mom or a loving family member! The town was easy to get to and I felt very safe in town and in her home. The class was informal and very well explained. It was easy to follow. It was a great pleasure to meet someone who was so polished and educated in her profession and life! Hopefully when I return to Buenos Aires, I will stay or definitely take the three day cooking course next time. Sincerely, Lourdes Aguirre My sister Liz, our friend Erin, and myself took part in the empanadas, paraillada, Brazilian fish stew classes. I am sorry that it is taken me this long to write back my response. Words can not really describe how being there made me feel; Hopefully this email will come close. Teresita completely sold me on my return to Argentina. One of her classes would be one of the first places I would want to stop on my return. From the moment Buddha picked us up in his car, to the point of having pretty much the 2nd worse hangover I have ever had from my birthday party (18 Nov 2007) 12 bottles of wine between 8 people, plus like a half bottle of Anise, it was the best time. The empanadas were dynamite. I cook for a living, and she made it simple and easy to learn from her. Everything she gave us from instructions of what to cut up, how hot to keep the pan had caring loving devotion. Teresita truly knows what she is teaching and her passion for the food is contagious. My overall favorite was the paraillada. That was my 24th birthday. I can say that it was the best birthday I have ever had. For any person who loves meat, and grilling it, that is sooo the class to take. Everyone who was in the class met at the butcher. We had meat picked out, and went back to her home and Buddha started the charcoal. I do not meat something in the sense of my favorite brand of Kingsford, it was carbon hardwood trees. Liz and Erin watched and sort of helped make Chimichurri, and Provancal as topping to be on the meat, and we ended up eating so much of it on just fresh baked bread we ended up running out at the end of the dinnner. We also started drinking at about 1130 in the AM. The last time I did that, well, I can not even think about starting to drink that early, even on sundays during Chicago Bears football season. I can not remember all the meat that we grilled, but here is a good list. Kidneys, Lamb intestine, Blood Sausage!! (so good), flank steak of pork, beef ribs. Thats barely cracking the surface. We ate continuously from 1230ish to about 600 630 that evening. We also drank wine contineously in that time as well. I liked wine before I went, I love wine now and what it meant having it there. Buddha was one of the sweetest old men I have ever met, and most likely will meet in my entire life. Besides my father, and a few other idols I have, Buddha and Teresitas' husband had the molds broken after they were made. The truely supported Teresita in her teachings and loved life. I know from this experience that life should be spent like that sunday afternoon was spent. SLOWLY and with the best company. Forget top 1000 things before I die, top thing I want todo before 2009 is to come back with more of my friends for even just one sunday at Teresitas' house. I made a quick chimichurri from all dried ingredients, and threw it on steaks this last Christmas for my Ship. I only made about 10 steaks and after about 20 seconds from 1 person trying a peice, there was not any steaks left over. I am leaving out the Fish Stew which was awesome in its own regard. It was easy to make, and quick too. I have been putting it off to make until I can actually find dende oil. I was given an apple tart/pie for my "cake" on my birthday. It also came with crema, not whipped just straight. WHOA, I will only share that with people I know and love, because when I taste another bite someday it will take me back to that stellar afternoon and people who can not stop and slow down enough to enjoy it would just miss out. We also had fresh Avacado con azcar y limon. That was so quick and easy. I have not had the chance to serve that, but that dessert will be in my cooking reptoire for the rest of my life. Graciela please pass on to Teresita that she is one of the most keen women I have ever met on this planet and my gratitude for teaching these classes. If you don't mind I want her to be my Honorary Abuela! Thank you so much, and I know this should be the standard; anyone who does not take these classes while in Buenos Aires missed out on experiencing brillance at its definiton. Please feel free to use these photos.. Your home and garden were so relaxing. We enjoyed the warm, friendly atmosphere. It almost felt like we were visiting a family member and preparing for a holiday. Thanks again for a wonderful time. Brad Clark More testimonials GO
